What a difference a year makes! - we only had ten athletes appear at the first round of the league last year. This year, thanks to the hard work of captains Mark Conway and Claire Bergin, we scored a win in the men's competition and a 3rd placing in the women's section at Tullamore, last Sunday. The men's team had wins in 100m Patrick Phelan; 200m Mark Kavanagh; S/Chase Rob Corbally; 5,000m Brendan O'Neill; High Jump Themba Nkoala, plus both relays, 4 x 100m Mark, Patrick, Joe and Deanna; 4 x 400 Philip, Neil, Kevin and Patrick. Relays underpin the strength of a club and a maximum return of points, without David Gillick and Nick Hogan augurs well for the future. Congratulations also to Joe Dowling 2nd 400m, who is only 17 years of age; Fionn-Cleirigh-Buttner 3rd 800m;Jonathan Miller 3rd 400m hurdles, Neil Cowzer 4th 1500m, Kevin Byrne 110m hurdles; Jerome Caprice 3rd Walk, Conor Sexton L.Jump and Ciaran Cronin T.Jump. Our women's team had four wins from: Sinead Denny 800m; Linda Byrne 3,000m; Anita White Javelin; and the 4 x 400m relay team: Linda Byrne, Bryony Treston, Laura Hannigan & Sinead Denny. Particular mention should be made of the performance of Zita Murphy, who scored a massive 14 points for the team with 2nd place in the 100m and 200m. The 2nd place by Mary McCarthy, walk and 3rd placings by Laura and Bryony ensured the points kept flowing along. Great contributions by Avril Dillon 100m hurdles & P.vault; Eimear Bennett 400m H; Lucy T.Jump/Shot; Lisa Wynne discus and 4th by 4 x 100m relay team saw the final score at 102 points for 3rd place behind Ferrybank and Leevale. Keep up the good work for the next round! |
