Well done to all those athletes (and supporters)who braved the elements to compete in the annual Gerry Farnan XC Race which was held in the Phoeinx Park on Sunday. The normally fast course which traditionally remains dry had heavy rainfall to slow down the field and create the more typical wet miserable XC race that people are used to.

The dominant figure of Joe Sweeney went out hard from the start and after battling in the initial stages with Michael Mullhare broke free to have another decisive win of about 40seconds. Joe was followed home by the relatively new senior athlete Emmet Jennings in 15th with the ever reliable Peter Mathews close behind in 23rd (Peter was also second in the over 40 category although he doesn't seem a day 39), Robert Corbally wrapped up the men's team chasing Peter home in 27th. Our Junior athletes also in the same race put in a brave effort and were led home by James Egan in 55th with Bill Crosbie and Evan Fitzsimons finishing up in 86th and 109th respectably. The best result of the day however was the team winning overall with only 6points separating the first 4 teams.

The women were also out and the steadily improving and (now married) Aoife Culhane (Byrne) ran an excellent race to cross the line in 2nd place being only beaten by Fionnuala Britton. Sarah Mulligan who has been competing in the mountains for the summer backed up Aoife in 12th place with Sheelagh Jones who is now competing in the over50's coming home in 58th (but fourth in the Over 50's). The women's Team finished up in 3rd.
