Lucy and DSD in Beijing - by Lucy Moore

DSD were well represented at the Olympics in Beijing! It was an amazing event and even experienced athletics supporters Pat Coyle and Lucy Moore were left extremely impressed! With 1.3 million volunteers all over the city and sporting venues, there was always someone to help you out! The Bird's Nest & the Watercube were incredible - especially at night - and what can you say about the athletics? We saw an incredible 5 world records on the track and several more in the weights room! Highlight for Lucy was Usain Bolt's incredible 100m - both the time and the style in which it was run. Equally entertaining was the last event in the field - the women's High Jump. Red hot favourity Blanka Vlasic made one error but it was at the winning height of 2.05m and allowed Tia Hallebaut from Belgium to snatch gold! The DSD connection here is that Deirdre Ryan had spent a year training with Tia and her coach in Belgium! We were represented on the track by David Gillick. David had been running so well all summer but unfortunately Beijing didn't go right for him. He was ably supported by all of his family and by a band of loyal supporters, led by Mark Donlon. All the Chinese supporters wanted to have their photos taken with Mark (see pics!). Well done to everyone who travelled to support - the special t-shirts will just have to be kept for the World Championships in Berlin next year! Here's to the next Olympic Games! Hopefully we will also be represented there by some of our younger athletes - "One World - One Dream!
