D.S.D. Athletic Club opened their cross-country season with a hard fought win at the Dublin Men’s Novice Cross-Country Championships in the Phoenix Park on Sunday. D.S.D. won on count back, as their 4th man finished in front of Liffey Valley’s 4th place finisher, with Clonliffe Harriers only one point behind in 3rd place. Robert Corbally, who is still a junior led the team home in 3rd place with Eoin Healy 12th, John Hartnett 13th Mark Conway 14th, Cathal Jenkinson 16th, J.J. Kelly 37th and Richard Donlon 52nd. In the Women’s Novice D.S.D. did not field a team but had Sarah Mulligan in silver medal position in the individual scoring. Sarah has returned to athletics after a few years break and certainly seems to have lost none of her ability, which saw her win many under age team medals.
In the juvenile races, run in conjunction with the Novice, D.S.D. had some great results with no less than 12 individual winners. Sarah Torrens U.10; Eimear Fitzpatrick U.11; Kate Murray 12; Siofra Cleirigh U.14; Laura Hannigan U.16; Niamh Denny U.17 were the winners in the girls section with Mark Carolan U.10; Patrick Elliott U.13; Ronan Hennigan U.15; Stephen Gibney U.16; Eibhin Fitzsimons U.17; and Emmet Jennings U.18, the boys winners.
All Ireland champion Siofra Cleirigh ran way with the U.14 girls 1500m race and looks like she can retain her title later in the year, and Niamh Denny and Laura Hannigan also impressed with comprehensive victories.
Stephen Gibney and Oisin O’Friel were good 1st and 2nd placings at U.16 level, with Emmet Jennings also impressive in the U.18 boys after running well for Ireland in the World Hill Running Championships.
All in all, it looks likely that D.S.D. can retain their top club in the country at cross-country, where they have won this title for the past 10 years.
Tinryland 4 mile race in Carlow Linda Byrne 1st, Aoife Byrne 2nd and Ruth Mills completing the team scoring so DSD win the women's team as well
