A small army of youngsters got their first introduction to hurdling, running, jumping and throwing at the club's first "Open Day" held at Irishtown last Saturday.
On hand were the club's coaches to give them a chance to try hurdles, long jumping, high jumping, turbo javelin, shot putt, sprinting and relays. The youngest age group (mostly seven year olds) got a taste of the basic athletics skills through Little Athletics - specially designed games introducing the basics of running, jumping and throwing. All this fulfills international recommendations on improving the general fitness, agility and strength of children at a young age.
Top priority is having fun and the good news is that everyone throughly enjoyed themselves. Even better news is that we still have room for newcomers at Irishtown - and who knows? We might unearth the next Thomas Barr!
Training takes place on Wednesdays evenings (7pm-8pm) and Saturday mornings (12 noon-1pm). A key event of the winter season is our annual club pentathlon which will take place at the new National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown next January.
Adults (and masters over 35) who want to try jumps, throws, hurdles or sprints are also very welcome at Irishtown. Contact the office for further details.
