Leinster Masters & Senior & U.23 Championships

14 DSD athletes travelled to Tullamore yesterday to compete in the Leinster U23, Senior and Masters Championships and it turned out to be a very successful trip with a total of 27 medals won – 23 Gold and 4 Silver plus a new Irish age group record for Kevin Byrne in the High Jump. There were some great performances over all events. Conor Halpin winning the senior men’s 1500m, Ailbhe Kenny winning the senior women’s triple jump and Hugh Gowing competing at his first Leinster championships picking up a silver in the senior men’s 100m. Cathryn Brady and Maxine Jones had good runs in the 800m and 1500m races, winning golds in both, which is good preparation for their trip to the British Masters in Birmingham on the 24th-25th June. Paedar McGing competed in both the 800m and pole vault which are events he does not normally compete in but was using as a practice for the Northern Ireland Decathlon later this month and won both. New DSD member Ronan Gatley had a great debut for Club winning 3 gold and 2 silver medals including a hard won 400mh race. As usual the ever young Michael McGarry (84) won all the events he entered in. A special mention to Emmy Coffey Nguyen who despite taking a bad fall while practicing the hurdles in Irishtown on Saturday still came down and did the Javelin and High Jump. Also Lucy Moore who while still having problems with her hip not only competed and won the hammer after spending all Saturday at the Irish Schools Championships but still found time to help officiate on Sunday.
