Good Performances at All-Ireland Schools

The Irish Schools competition is the toughest competition in the country encompassing all of the 32 counties, and D.S.D athletes proved that they were up for the challenge on Saturday with two top class performances. Ciarán Carthy won gold in the Inter Boys 400m in 49.98 (PB), and Aaron Donnelly also won gold in the 2,000m Steeplechase. Ciarán had also qualified for the 400m hurdles at Leinster Schools, but made the right decision in turning to the 400m flat, where he raced to a comprehensive victory from gun to tape. He’ll be hoping to improve further on this time in the near future. Aaron was his usual imperious self over the hurdles in the s/chase and won his first national title in a gutsy front running display, which augurs well for his future in the sport. Brian Maguire (3rd) was also in top form in the senior boys 1500m and put himself firmly in contention for the European Youth Olympics by finishing in front of his main rivals, who have also achieved the qualifying time for the 1500m. Others to impress were: Niamh Gowing finishing 3rd in a high class 400m in 56.47; Laura Gallagher, a close up 3rd, out of her age group, with a great P.B. of 44.72 in the Inter 300mH; Liam Jenkins 6th Inter Boys High Jump 1.80; Hannah Murray 5th Junior Girls 75m hurdles; Molly Hourihan 400mH & relay and Aimee Kenna 800m, and other athletes who took part in relays for their schools. Well done to all!
