For most of them it was a first experience at championship level and will stand them in good stead for their future in athletics, as they have youth on their side and more years at this level ahead of them. Even after a long year in American Collegiate competition, Siofra Cleirigh Buttner showed a toughness of mental strength with a gutsy display in her heat, which saw her just fall short of a final place. Not content with this she continued to chase after her Olympic dream and clocked a 2.01.9 800m (PB) on Saturday in Solihull at BMC Meet. Sinead Denny ran a monumental race in the first round of the 400mto reach the semi final and was then only 1/100th of a second off her P.B with a time of 53.27, which fully justified her inclusion in the European team, which concluded with a strong performance in the 4x400m. After three years out of the sport, David Gillick found his individual return a bit troublesome, but showed his qualify in the 4x400m relay, with the team finishing 5th overall in a top class European final. Kevin Batt should also benefit in the future, at 24 years of age, from this experience at 5,000m, where he finished 17th in 14.20.50.
