Leinster Indoor Athletics Championships
The golden trail continued for D.S.D in Abbotstown at the weekend, as we added three more golds to our impressive collection for 2018, at the Leinster Indoor Championships. The new super star of Irish distance running, Hiko Tonosa, (Ethiopian born) gave an impressive display of front running in his first ever indoor race, as he romped away with the 3,000m in 8.16.61. There were gasps of astonishment from spectators as he set off at sub 4 minute mile pace and lapped most of the field as the race progressed. Hiko was followed home for silver and bronze by Robert Corbally 8.32.88 and Paul O’Donnell 8.33.50. Jack MacGabhann was 4th 8.39.10; Riadhan O’Grada 8.52.69 and Mark Molloy 9.13.08. Hiko wants to declare for Ireland as soon as asylum rules allow him to do so, and he already boasts the fastest times in the country for 3,000/5,000m of last year. Mark Kavanagh clocked 6.90 in the Men’s 60m finishing 2nd, and was also 2nd in the 200m 21.83. The 3,000m women’s race was again a top class race with Abbie Taylor fortuitously taking gold from her D.S.D club mate, Fiona Clinton. Abbie won her first senior title at 17 years of age, as confusion reigned, entering the last lap, when the leader Kelly Neally sprinted to the line thinking she was finished, and with one lap still to go Fiona Clinton also stopped. Abbie seized her chance and ran the last 200m lap in 36 seconds to take gold in 9.39.00, and Fiona continued on to complete the race in 2nd place in 9.41.10. D.S.D’s 15 year old Corrine Kenny moved up to the U.20 age group and showed she is a name for the future winning readily in 2.17.56, with training companion, Emma Ryan, 2nd in 2.19.34.
