Spirit Sandyford 5K 2019 – a mighty success!

We did it! The Milltown Physio Team A record field of over 800 refused to let a last minute downpour drown their spirits at this year’s record-breaking Spirit Sandyford 5k. In its fifth year, the Spirit Sandyford 5k is hosted by Dundrum South Dublin AC. It’s a significant fundraiser for the Club as it advances with its ambitious plans for a Multi-Sports Campus in the St Thomas estate which will cater for all athletics disciplines as well as many other sports. For the fourth year, Rob Corbally was first across the line, with 15.40 this year; he was followed by Ian Conroy (Raheny Shamrocks) and David Willis. First woman to finish was Malika Hammani (Cabinteely Hill Harriers) with 19:33, followed by Jennifer O’Sullivan and Geraldine Lacey (also Cabinteely Hill Harriers). The leading mens’ teams were Team M1 1, followed by Roughan and O’Donovan 1 and BD Sharps 1. Top women’s teams were Cabinteely Hill Harriers 1 followed by Speedy Dirtbirds 1 and the Winning Dirtbirds 1. The leading mixed team, Flipdish 1, followed by Milltown Physiotherapy 1 and Cabinteely Hill Harriers X1. In addition to the biggest ever field, this year also saw the biggest ever goody bags which were provided at Race HQ – the Volvo Spirt showrooms. The goody bags positively groaned with snacks and treats and of course every finisher was also provided with a medal as well as a souvenir tee shirt.
Racing ICONs The Club owes a huge debt of gratitude to our sponsors Spirit Motor Group, KBC Bank, Total Physio, Sandyford Business District Association, the Beacon Hotel, Freshii and the Beacon Hospital and to the race registration team at Pop Up Races. Extensive support was provided also by the Gardaí from Dundrum, the folks in Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, and we also want to acknowledge the support and good wishes we received from local businesses and residents. Finally, and most importantly, the Club wishes to thank the race organising committee, comprising volunteers and staff from the DSD Events office and most particularly the 100+ Club members and parents who braved the elements and offered fantastic support to the participants as well as ensuring the race was superbly organised.
Flipdish ready to go! Our volunteers were provided with some delicious refreshments organised by a handful of Club members and photographs were supplied by our team of photographers (Dave Gowan, Donal Hennigan and Eoin Carroll). The official race video, available to view shortly, was arranged thanks to Bernard Clarke. Not only was this a great event for all who took to the start line, it was also a great night for DSD. This run showcased the true spirit of the Club and it’s no wonder we had plenty of enquiries from prospective members who were invited to join our vibrant Meet & Train Group who contributed so much to the success of the event. This race is now firmly established as a not-to-be-missed event in Sandyford, and it’s also a great night for DSD! See you all there again in 2020! Fintan Hourihan Race Organising Committee
