D.S.D., athletes were in dominant form on Saturday at the All Ireland U.20/U.23 Championships in Tullamore. Leader of a host of medal winners was Kate Doherty, who continued her sparkling 2018 form with a gold medal in the 100m, in 12.06 (PB). She returned later to achieve a European U.23 Q.T. in the 100m hurdles with great new PB of 13.78, winning silver and just pipped for gold by Elizabeth Moreland, Cushinstown A.C.
D.S.D. vests were prominent throughout the perfect sunny day, as Paul O’Donnell set a strong pace in the U.23 5,000m and looked imperious as he strode to an impressive victory. Jack MacGabhann also showed his toughness in this race, as he came through the field to pick up silver. Jo Halwax led by example in the u23 400mH, dipping under 54 secs., (53.87), for a comprehensive victory with David Dagg closing strongly behind to grab bronze, in PB of 56.02. The second of the MacGabhann twins, Patrick, finished 2nd in the U.23 1500m in 4.18.29. Patrick was unlucky as he came off the final bend stumbling in a clash with another competitor, losing 5/6 metres, just as Cathal Doyle, Clonliffe Harriers, started his sprint to the finish. Ruadhan O’Grada also finished powerfully for 4th place in 4.18.68 and Christian McKenna, returning to action after a year out with injury, finished 7th, in a top class field. Aaron Donnelly impressed in the U.20 3,000m S/Chase, finishing 2nd in 9.52.40, as he makes this Junior age group for two more years. James Holden was 3rd U.20 200 22.43.
Although it was a ‘golden day’ generally, the silver lining in terms of medals was just as satisfactory for D.S.D.
