D.S.D ended their Juvenile season yesterday in Tullamore at the Irish Life National Track & Field Championships, with three more gold medals, from James Maguire U.18 1500m 4.03.25; Laura Gallagher U.15 250m hurdles 36.38 and James Holden U.19 200m 22.35.
James Maguire had, arguably, the hardest task, as 34 athletes turned up for the u.18 1500m, which involved having to run 1500m heats with the final taking place later in the afternoon. James responded well to the extra pressure and delivered an outstanding performance, as he looked beaten with a lap to go, when he was overtaken having led all the way to that point, but he proved himself a real champion producing a great sprint over the final 60m to win going away in 4.0.3.25.
Laura Gallagher added another gold to the one she won last weekend in the 80m hurdles when she took the title with a comprehensive win in the 250m hurdles.
James Holden was in impressive form in the 200m as he led all the way to take the title in a new personal best of 22.35.
Silver medals were won by Ciaran Carthy U.17 300m hurdles, and Cian Dunne U.15 250m hurdles.
Cian was delighted to win his first national medal, as he lunged to the finish line and was only denied first place in the final stride.
Ciaran, who played a big part on Saturday in Ireland’s 2nd place to England, in the Schools Track & Field International in Santry, when he finished 3rd in the 400m hurdles and ran a great leg in the 4×400 2nd place finish by Ireland. He showed how tough a competitor he is yesterday, after a titantic battle in the 300m hurdles and was just beaten for first by a fraction.
Niamh Gowing added a bronze in the 400m hurdles to her gold of last week in the flat 400, with a time of 64.91.
Other Bronze medals were won by Molly Hourihan 300m hurdles 44.72; and Roseanne McCullough 1500m 4.58.
We had other good performances from: Ali Boylan 4th 400m hurdles U.18 68; Gavin Doran 5th U.16 200m 24.32; Charlotte Bourke 5th U.16 250m hurdles 39.07; Aisling King 4th 1500m 5.04.49; Saoirse O’Brian and Ella O’Donohue U.14 1500m; Cian O’Sullivan U.15 1500m; Emily Bradshaw Javelin 8th and Emma Roche Shot Putt 10th.
