A smashing performance by Hiko Tonosa saw him break his 5th course record, in the Kia Series, at the Trim Braveheart 5k, with a time of 14.38. He is now in an unassailable position, for the use of a Kia car for one year. This was easily his most impressive performance to date, as he won by an unbelievable margin of 1 min 6 seconds from Peter Somba (Dunshaughlin/Kenya), himself a prolific winner on the distance circuit in Ireland. Hiko went through the first 3,000m in just over 8 mins on a tough hilly trail course. He will now turn his attention to the track season and has the Morton Games and Cork City Sports to look forward to in July, where he will meet top class international competition. Hiko, who was born in Ethiopia, says it his biggest wish to declare for Ireland as soon as he qualifies to do so.
In the same race Laura Shaughnessy ran national steeplechase champion, Kerry O’Flaherty, to a 7 seconds margin, when finishing 2nd in the Women’s race, in a time of 16.47.
Well done!
