The old adage “form is temporary, class is permanent” was proven once again at the opening of the Kia Series of road races in Portlaoise yesterday, as D.S.D’s Olympians Linda Byrne and Maria McCambridge came home with top honours in their categories over 5k. Linda, Olympian and gold medal team winner with Ireland at the European Cross Country Championships, stormed to an impressive win in the Women’s race in a time of 17.10. Maria, also an Olympian and 2013 Dublin City Marathon winner, topped the W40 category in 18.49. Both have been competing for D.S.D.AC for almost 25 years, and have made an indelible mark in Irish distance running.
The closest race of the day was the men’s 5k race as John Travers (Donore) and Hiko Tonosa , interchanged the lead from the gun and both smashed the course record with their respective times of 14.25 and 14.34. John, who recently returned from the European Indoor Championships, showed superior speed over the last 300m for a fine win. Eoin Everard (KCH) was a further 10 seconds back in 3rd place. Hiko expressed satisfaction with his race, after injury setback, which disrupted his training for three months.
Well done to all!
