The National 5K Road race championship was held in a sunny and hilly Phoenix Park course on Saturday 17th May.
The DSD senior men and women’s teams took to the start line confident after some strong recent performances and they weren’t to disappoint, achieving a great double team win.
Killian Mooney led the men’s team home with an excellent 3rd place finish in 14.35. With Emmet Jennings 6th (14.45), Michael McCarthey 10th (15mins), David Gormley 32nd (16.02) the team were to record a great team win over Raheny Shamrocks.
Ella Fennelly, back from London for the race to support her team mates, led the Women’s team home with a super 2nd place finish (16.40), with Meghan Ryan 4th, Saoirse O’Brien (Our 2025 national Duathlon champion) 12th, the team had a commanding win over Annadale Striders. Team member Serena Tuffy having taken a heavy fall on the start line, struggled back to her feet and with blood streaming from cuts to her face, pushed herself to finish the race to ensure we had a scoring team – a true champion.
The team wins today come on the back of strong performances at the recent National Senior Road Relays (Women 1st, Men 4th) and it was particularly satisfying that the athletes involved have been training with the DSD endurance group since they were 13 and are still training well, racing well and are proudly representing the club.
