Irish Schools Cross-Country, Sligo

Four D.S.D., athletes have qualified to compete for Ireland in the Schools International/Home Countries Int., from Saturday’s All-Ireland Championships held at Sligo Racecourse. A 1st for Eimear Fitzpatrick and 2nd for Niamh Carey in the Senior Girls’, ensures they will be on the plane for the International. Great runs also for Abi Taylor 6th and Roseanne McCulloughalso ensured they would be competing against the best from England, Scotland & Wales in two week’s time. Aimee McKenna surprised a lot of people in the Minor age group as she had finished 3rd in the Leinster finals, saving her best for Saturday, as she won quite readily sprinting up the last tough hill to the finish. Alex and Morgan led Colaiste Eoin to silver medals in the minor boys. Paul O’Donne’l, Ruadhan O’Grada, Aoife Colleran, Grace Dervan were also to the fore for their schools. Best senior performance of the day was from Killian Mooney, who finished 4th in a tough 5 lap Universities Race, the youngest competitor at the front of the field. In the women’s race Laura Shaughnessy finished 3rd, with Harriette Robinson 7th; Sarah Fitzpatrick 8th; Claire McCarthy 10th and Sarah Miles 13th. Well done to all!
