DSD were out in force at the illustrious Raheny 5-mile road race on Sunday 25th January. Almost 30 DSD athletes toed the start line, on the quick course around the streets of Raheny. At the head of affairs, there was an extremely competitive field, with a group of athletes breaking away from the rest in the early stages. DSD’s Killian Mooney was amongst them and having finished 2nd to Efrem Gidey last year, was hoping to test out his form ahead of his upcoming challenge on the half and full marathon distances. Spectators were on the edge of their seats as a nail-biting finish unfolded at the front. UCD’s Jonas Stafford and Clonliffe’s Colm Rooney broke away from the field in the final stages and locked horns in a titanic battle down the home straight, with Stafford just edging the win. Killian had to settle for 5th place, but can be content with this indication of good form, seeing as he was faster than last year, and right in the mix with some of the best athletes in the country. Killian led the DSD men’s team to 5th place overall, with the team scoring being backed up by Phil Simpson (43rd) and Owen Morris (119th).
On the women’s side, DSD provided a strong showing in the team event, finishing in 2nd place overall, not far behind a strong team from DCH. Lisa Gaughran in 14th and Ruth Wilson in 15th led the DSD charge, with Jessica Quinn in 23rd finishing off the scoring. Great to see so many from Meet, Train, Race competing in this prestigious event, and coming away with some silverware.
