It was a busy and successful weekend for the DSD Endurance athletes at the 2025 Dublin City Marathon. The D.C.M was also hosting the 2025 Irish National Marathon Championships.
Paul O’Donnell and Hiko Tonoso went into the Men’s National Championships with high hopes of Podium finishes. Hiko of course the defending champion.
In the Women’s race Meghan Ryan took to the start line hoping to challenge in her first home marathon.
As expected, the early part of the race was cagey with Paul and Hiko running on the back of the lead group. Competing for the National Title with Paul and Hiko was Ryan Creech of Leevale and David McGlynn of Waterfrod AC. By Halfway a group of 6, which included Hiko, had broken away at the front. Paul was leading the chase with Ryan Creech on his shoulder.
In the Women’s race, by half way there were two clear leaders in the Irish Championships with Meghan Ryan holding a position in 6th place running strongly and sticking to her race plan.
As the race progressed through to the DSD water station at Milltown, Hiko was running 5th and Paul 8th overall and 2nd & 4th in the Men’s national championship. Meghan at this stage had moved steadily through the field to 10th overall and 4th in the Irish Championships.
The support through Orwell Park and on into Clonskeagh was magnificent and drove the DSD athletes on. Unfortunately, Hiko having run into issues had to drop out at Clonskeagh. Paul however had worked through a bad patch and was moving well again and secured a position in 3rd place (7th overall). Meghan, running strongly, had closed to within 30 seconds off 3rd place in the National Championships.
In spite of their best efforts neither Paul or Meghan could close down their rivals over the last few miles and crossed the line in 3rd and 4th places respectively. Paul finished in 2:12 and Meghan in 2:40. Both athletes put in an incredible shift on a cloudy, wet and blustery day.
In the men’s race Paul was followed home by Philip Simpson who had a super run to finish 63rd in 2:34. Conor Halpin rounded out the men’s team in 2hrs 47. The men’s team finishing 7th.
The Women’s team secured a great 3rd in the team competition with Lisa Gaughran finishing in 3:01 and Ruth Wilson in 3:03.
(Thanks to Donal for report) – very well done to all!
